WOC: A Sisterhood
This experimental multimedia project started through a one-week artist residency for Iman Bukhari with Arts Commons. Iman used her artist residency to create and exhibit an avant garde project aiming to introduce the complicated relationship between feminine beauty, identity, and race.
Artist and CEO of Canadian Cultural Mosaic Foundation, Iman is a Pakistani Canadian immigrant working in the field of digital media and creative writing. Iman's project features nine women who tell their story about the complexities of being women of colour in our society. This project builds on Iman's passion for social justice and the complex intersections of race.
For Iman, this experiment is “about showing women of colour who are un-apologetically themselves… because it takes guts to be yourself.”
The idea for the project started from her personal experiences growing up and realizing that women of colour experience the world differently than others, and these experiences bring them closer together.

A major theme in the project for Iman was identity. Through intimate interviews with the participants, Iman captured their experiences and struggles growing up. Though every woman was unique, much like their features, they all had one thing in common: they all faced discrimination due to their race and gender.
During the week of the residency, Iman captured personal dream-like macro photos and videos of the women in bright lights to show them in a way they aren't normally seen - in vibrance. The video also tells a collaborative story of struggle and triumph for each woman.
"Normally, women of colour are seen as angry or the victim. I wanted to show them in bright colours - and in a way where their skin is not the focus, but their beautiful features and personal stories are."
